Project: A one-stop shop for the same day diagnosis and management of TB and HIV
Acronym | Stop TB/HIV at one (Reference Number: DRIA2014-309) |
Duration | 01/04/2016 - 31/03/2019 |
Project Topic | The study aims to develop new diagnostic algorithms that reach a diagnosis of TB and HIV in a single visit. We aim to fulfil this objective in three stages: a. Evaluating the performance of new diagnostic tests for TB and HIV. These evaluations will be conducted simultaneously in Nigeria, Moldova and Barcelona. b. Once information of the tests performance is complete, we will develop diagnostic algorithms combining the selected diagnostic assays. These algorithms aim to reach a diagnosis of TB and HIV in the shortest possible time and at the lowest possible cost. c. We will then test the new diagnostic algorithms in real life conditions in Nigeria and Ethiopia. In the first year of activities, we prepared the study sites, formalised collaborative arrangements, developed study protocols and obtained ethical clearance. However, we experienced a delay to start testing the new platforms. This was due to many of the platforms proposed not meeting the quality criteria required for clinical use. Some of the tests were unreliable when tested by us or the manufacturer (for example, some tests did not sterilise the sputum and would not have been safe to use outside a laboratory), others had a poor performance to detect TB when tested on a small scale and for others, the manufacturer took the decision to stop their development for commercial reasons. We have thus taken time to identify new diagnostic platforms that could replenish our pipeline and will start testing them in July 2017. To compensate for this delay, we will enrol patients at a faster pace and will aim to be on time meet the objectives for end of year 2. The new platforms will be available to us in the summer/Autumn of 2017. |
