Project: Standards and e-learning course to maximise the uptake of infusion and calibration best practices

Multi-infusion pumps are medical devices used to deliver multiple fluids, containing nutrients or medications, to patients in a controlled manner through the same injection point. However, it’s known that the use of multi-infusions can lead to dosing errors, due to the reduced accuracy with which the flow rate is known compared to infusions of just one fluid. To improve the accuracy and efficiency of patient treatment with infusion technology, EMRP project HLT07 MeDD developed a best practice guide and a preliminary e-learning training course on multi-infusion technology, and established calibration services for infusion devices. This project, working with the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) as the primary supporter, will build awareness of the risks and best practices related to infusion technology through workshops for clinical users, and incorporate best practice concerning the calibration of infusion devices into two ISO and IEC standards. These outputs will make a significant contribution towards reduced dosing errors and better treatment outcomes for patients with multi-infusion technology.
