Project: Traceable measurements for monitoring critical pollutants under the European Water Framework Directive (WFD-2000/60/EC)
The European Water Framework Directive (WFD) aims to improve European water resources and prevent any further deterioration in their quality by the year 2015. According to the WFD, EU Member States are obliged to monitor the ecological status of their inland waters in order to ensure their long-term sustainable use. The project helped to improve the quality and comparability of such monitoring data by developing primary reference methods for selected water pollutants, as well as new concepts for whole water reference materials and test materials, that can meet the requirements of the WFD and related Directives. The project also helped to improve the quality and comparability of monitoring data obtained by laboratories under the WFD. These results will help to ensure long-term reliability of water monitoring data obtained under the WFD, reduce the presence of toxic pollutants in Europe’s water resources and support better decision-making in the field of water management.
