Project: Metrology for essential climate variables

Essential climate variables include water vapour in the atmosphere, surface and deep sea temperature, ocean salinity, air temperature, precipitation and soil moisture. Long-term, high-quality observations of these variables are vital as society becomes increasingly affected by climate change. Air humidity provides a challenge as water content in the atmosphere can vary by a factor of more than 10,000, and humidity sensors need to make measurements over this large dynamic range. In the oceans, salinity and temperature measurements can be influenced by factors such as water pressure. On land, differences between laboratory and real conditions need to be solved for precipitation and soil moisture. This project will investigate the performance of sensors used to monitor climate variables under different conditions and produce new measurement methods, techniques and standards. The results will improve the monitoring of essential climate variables, which will benefit European industries such as agriculture, energy, and transport, and reduce the threat to public health.
