Project: DeSign of a Ubiquitous Navigation device for iNtelligent guidance sYstems
SUNNY is aligned with the current steady growth in the interest of concretization of Smart Spaces, centred at solving the location information needs for Intelligent Guidance Systems to provide ubiquitous Smart Services to customers when transitioning from one environment to another._x000D_To reach this objective, the project focuses on the design of a hybrid GNSS/UWB-based standalone Navigation Device (ND) that is able to meet the today’s most stringent LBS requirements in both outdoor and indoor situations. The envisaged ND exploits tightly coupled GNSS and UWB positioning techniques to efficiently act in both outdoor and indoor situations through its intrinsic capability to compute its position using almost indistinctly range/pseudorange measurements based on the received GNSS and UWB signals. This virtually eliminates the problem of the handover when the ND moves from one environment to another, making itself adaptive to the propagation environments._x000D_The ND software and hardware will be jointly optimized, allowing manufacturing of small and low-power NDs. The SUNNY consortium will resolve a set of complex and multidisciplinary issues to successfully design the envisaged ND including: the derivation of hybrid GNSS/UWB positioning algorithms, the implementation of the ND prototype, the development of a low cost UWB infrastructure suitable to be commercially exploited and the validation of the developed system (ND and UWB infrastructure) through real-field tests. _x000D_The CO application of this device is dedicated, but not limited, to Intelligent Guidance Systems where transitioning from indoor to outdoor, are frequent and unavoidable such as: shopping malls, warehouses, large scale metropolitan events (e.g. museums, institutional buildings), ports and airports._x000D_The related market segments (outdoor-indoor location aware services) will be immediately explored by the consortium SMEs through the establishment of efficient and feasible business models and exploitation plans._x000D_The key idea of the project is to investigate, design and implement an optimized hybrid GNSS/UWB standalone ND that is capable of supporting both the outdoor (when the GNSS signals are present) and the indoor (when the GNSS signals are not available) localization functionalities. This hybrid GNSS/UWB ND exploits tightly coupled GNSS and UWB positioning techniques to efficiently act in both outdoor and indoor situations through its intrinsic capability to compute its position using almost indistinctly range/pseudorange measurements based on the received GNSS and UWB signals and making itself intrinsically adaptive to the propagation environment._x000D_As the SUNNY ND will be dedicated to an immediate exploitation by the consortium SMEs in their targeted LBS market segments, several constraints will be fulfilled in its development including: the derivation of hybrid GNSS/UWB efficient positioning algorithms, the software and hardware design joint optimization in order to allow manufacturing of small and low-power implementation of NDs, the development of a low effective cost UWB infrastructure suitable to be commercially exploited and that is compliant with the UWB ETSI constraints and the validation of the whole developed SUNNY system (ND and UWB infrastructure) through real-field measurements. _x000D_The SUNNY consortium was formed keeping a strong focus on the P’s skills and the declared interest of the SUNNY SMEs to exploit the project results within their product roadmap in the near future. SUNNY will address multiple R&D doCOs and technologies and will involve a team of highly skilled researchers. All these ingredients converge to the common goal of making of Hybrid GNSS/UWB device for enhanced Indoor/Outdoor navigation. The successful achievement of the objectives defined for the SUNNY project, requires the combination of various types of competences that its consortium will exploit._x000D_The SUNNY work plan ensures that these competences are brought together in a synergetic manner so that they converge to the common SUNNY objectives. Furthermore, the SUNNY consortium is well-balanced (2 Ps from 2 Eurostars countries), and P profiles (2 SMEs).

Duration | 01/12/2013 - 30/11/2015 |
Project Topic | SUNNY targets a hybrid GNSS/UWB-based autonomous Navigation Device (ND) that is able to meet the today’s stringent LBS requirements for human and device tracking and navigation. This ND exploits tightly coupled GNSS and UWB positioning techniques to efficiently act in outdoor/indoor situations. |
Project Results (after finalisation) |
Localization algorithms have been developed using UWB signals._x000D_An automatic setup process for the UWB-based localization infrastructure has been proposed and tested on computer simulator. _x000D_UWB devices have been purchased by TeSA to implement the proposed algorithms on real hardware, but the project was stopped before the implementation could be completed. |
