Project: Development of the properties and application methods for direct and indirect polyurea products
Polinvent Ltd (PI) carried out two successful R&D projects between 2008 and 2010. In the first one, supported by the EUROSTARS-2008 programme and a Hungarian programme, PI developed epoxy-amine adduct components for hot sprayed, direct polyurea (PU) coatings. They provide high adhesive strength on steel surface. In parallel, PI developed a new generation of its 3P resins for trenchless sewer repair: the 3P hybrid, the 4P, and the 4P hybrid resins. Market introduction of all these products is going on, partly through Fluvius GmbH. According to recent market information it is likely that by solving some application technology problems and the related targeted chemical research and development, the new products may be attractive for substantially wider markets than earlier._x000D__x000D_Goal of the project is the development and further development of materials and technologies._x000D__x000D_a) Directly prepared PU materials_x000D_In our EUROSTARS-2008 project (POLYLAYER) PI created diamine and triamine type epoxy-amine adducts, being polymeric (REACH), and during the addition of the epoxy compound, primary amines are transformed into less reactive secondary amines (patent application P1000390, PCT/HU2010/000090). Adducts provide fast, medium or slow reaction with the isocyanate groups, depending on the starting components. In traditional hot sprayed processing of PU systems adducts having fast or medium reactivity are favourable as parts of amine blends._x000D__x000D_For the slow PU systems COly aspartic secondary amines (Bayer) are applied. Based on preliminary tests, combined by these ones, and/or by other known compounds, the slow adducts of PI are also suitable to prepare high quality slow PU systems. We wish to increase the slow PU product range by these adducts. We also wish to carry out a technical and economic optimising. The slow PU systems can be used at room temperature by traditional airless spray technique easily. Their mounting is also possible by brush or paint roller etc., and they are environment friendly, solvent-free systems._x000D__x000D_Hot sprayed fast PU coatings need often repair right after spraying (e.g. due to pores or salient particles), and the practical way of repairing these small local failures is the cartridge technology. We aim at developing target formulated preparations with the required RAL colour code for both of the traditional technologies using large volumes, and for the repair systems based on the cartridge technology as well as on special medium sized containers._x000D__x000D_Polinvent has modern factory, analytical laboratory, storage capacity and R&D background for the synthesis of the new basic components as well as for the formulation of the “A” and “B” component blends for the products. Fluvius has technology experience, wide corporate network and good market relations._x000D__x000D_b) Indirectly prepared PU materials_x000D_The indirectly prepared polyurea products are made of water glass and isocyanate systems in-situ (3P resins). Water glass is dispersed in the MDI and PMDI type polyisocyanates during processing, i.e. it is distributed in the organic phase in fine colloid droplets. Reaction starts on the surface of the droplets: a part of the MDI and PMDI hydrolyses to MDA and PMDA, i.e. di- and polyamides, respectively. These components react immediately further with the surplus of MDI and PMDI. Water glass droplets transform first to Sodium-Silicate gel, then to xerogel, and it reCOs back in the polyurea matrix in uniform distribution._x000D__x000D_MDA-MDI, and PMDA-PMDI type PU systems cannot be used in direct, solvent-free form in the practice, because the reaction is extremely fast. However, these PU systems are very chemical resistant, heat resistant and stable, and therefore, there is a market demand._x000D__x000D_c) Development of the technologies_x000D_The first goal is the manufacturing resin components in cartridge systems to prepare pore free resins in-situ by static mixers connected to the cartridge. This is a goal for the slow direct, as well as for the indirect PU products. Directions of further material development are determined by fulfilling the viscosity demands belonging to the expected storage and usage temperatures. Material costs for the indirect systems are usually lower than for the direct systems. _x000D_For the slow direct and indirect PU products, a further goal is the application technology development of materials which are packaged in 50-200 litre containers. This solution could cover the economical feasibility of the materials for manhole repairs, etc. We aim at bringing the new materials to market by using more user-friendly packaging types than available now, and combine those with easy-to-use construction technologies._x000D__x000D_Fluvius GmbH will play key role in the technology tests, and in the mapping of the markets in Germany, in Europe and globally, as well as in developing respective marketing strategies._x000D_The Ps wish to involve SBKS GmbH & Co. KG as an independent advisory and testing institution with high quality measuring equipment.
