Project: SME for T2
The SME42 project (SME for T2) aims to implement, validate and experience the Second Generation of the Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial standard (DVB-T2), thus :_x000D_. Contributing to the works of the DVB forum in its goal to elaborate the Digital Video Broadcasting landscape of the 21st Century,_x000D_. Helping SME42 Ps to access the worlwide market addressed by the DVB technologies._x000D__x000D_Since its inception in 1997, DVB-T (the DVB Terrestrial TV transmission system) has fully justified the objectives of its designers, delivering “wireless” Digital TV services in almost every Continent. However, the emergence of new consumer applications (i.e. TV to mobile), new spectrum policy (i.e. the digital dividend resulting from analogue switch off) and the convergence of various wireless technologies have lead the DVB community to both evaluate the suitability of the existing DVB-T system to accommodate such emerging situations and to consider the benefits that new state-of-the-art technologies could bring to the DVB Terrestrial platform. In light of such challenges, and recognising the successful introduction of the DVB-S2 (2G Satellite platform) in 2003, DVB launched the development and the standardisation of the second generation of DVB Terrestrial transmission systems in 2007 and the 2G technical specifications are expected in June 2008. _x000D__x000D_SME42 project, in this context, has the clear objectives to sustain Digital Video Broadcasting works, demanded by emerging new applications and usage of broadcast contents, for its Terrestrial Platform. _x000D__x000D_In 2007, it is estimated that among the 200 millions DVB's Digital TV decoders in use around the world, up to _x000D_70 millions are devoted to the Terrestrial platform (DVB-T) the reCOing being shared by the satellite plarform (DVB-S ~100 millions) and the Cable platform (DVB-C ~30 millions). DVB-T2 expects then a Worldwide market as wide as - not to say wider - the DVB-T one, and provides state-of-the-art technologies to target a wide range of applications from Fix to Mobile - in short Nomadic - reception of Terrestrial Digital TV services. In such context, a big competition is expected among the large Industrial groups from Europe / Americas / Asia. _x000D__x000D_SME42 Ps, who were involved - since the infancy - in the elaboration of the DVB-T2 technical specifications, decided to group their efforts in order to design the World First prototype implementation of the DVB-T2 transmission system._x000D__x000D_SME42 Ps are committed :_x000D_. To implement in real hardware prototypes both T2 modulator & T2 demodulator ,_x000D_. To validate the DVB-T2 technical specifications, _x000D_. To assess in laboratory & possibly on the field, the T2 transmission performances,_x000D_. To contribute to the DVB-T2 Implementation Guide Lines (within the DVB-T2 ad-hoc group),_x000D_. To disseminate the results of the SME42 projects to the whole DVB community. _x000D__x000D__x000D_SME42 project groups two SMEs (SIDSA & TeamCast) and an Academic (Telecom Bretagne) Ps from France & Spain, who actively contribute to the DVB-T2 technical works by delivering major technical contributions, some of them being already part of the T2 specifications. The SME42 Ps have moreover actively contributed to the elaboration & validation of previous DVB standards like DVB-T, DVB-H and DVB-SH._x000D__x000D_Clearly, the SME42 project’s major objectives are to contribute in making the DVB Terrestrial 2G Platform _x000D_. a great technical success (through contributions to DVB), _x000D_. sustained by a large commercial success (through products exploitation), _x000D__x000D_Both the large amount of expertise and the dynamism of the SME42 Ps constitute definitive assets for these goals._x000D_
Acronym | SME42 (Reference Number: 4324) |
Duration | 01/07/2008 - 01/01/2011 |
Project Topic | The objective of SME42 is to validate & to experiment the Second generation of the DVB-T standard. Prototypes of T2 modulator & T2 receiver will be designed, experienced in laboratory & possibly on the field, to perform a World First Validation of the future European Terrestrial Digital TV standard. |
Project Results (after finalisation) |
The SME42 project allowed Institut Telecom/Telecom Bretagne to implement and validate a hardware prototype for the Bit-Interleaved Coded Modulation part of the DVB-T2 modulator and demodulator: mapper and demapper of rotated and non-rotated constellations, bit interleaver and bit de-interleaver, Low Density Parity-Check encoder and decoder. _x000D_This work was carried out in the framework of a PhD thesis and has been published in three IEEE conferences so far: SiPS2009, SiPS2010, ICASSP2011. It was also submitted to SiPS 2012. A paper is under writing for submission to IEEE TCAS II journal._x000D_A technology transfer of the components implemented during the project is currently being carried out with a small company in the Paris area. |
