Project: Just In time Learning pills for agile Learning environment at work
JILL is a market-oriented R&D project which will prototype eLearning software system for work environments which integrates in a novel way learning with content and competency management and uses MicroLearning approach to successfully integrate small learning steps into the everyday work flow of employees just-in-time and right at their working desks. _x000D__x000D_Existing systems are separated into Learning ManageSys (LMS) managing corporate training programs, Competency ManageSys (CMS) tracking skills of employees and their progress And Enterprise Content ManageSys (ECM) organizing access to COC/SOP manuals, white papers, blueprints etc. JILL addresses the failure of coherence of these systems and the deficit to INTEGRATE DAILY employees’ ACTIVITIES WITH THEIR LEARNING PROCESS. JILL aims to offer a proactive, context-aware and adaptable way, in particular by providing relevant, ad-hoc learning opportunities. _x000D__x000D_JILL implements the approach of A) Integrated MicroLearning (learning with small units in short, frequent iterations, push-function, memory algorithm, activity breaks) and B) “just in time” Learning Pills (LPs) (i.e. Learning Objects (LOs) served in a personalized way according to the user’s current needs). LOs are seen as small units of learning content (typically 2-15 minutes) that are: (i) self-contained (can be taken independently); (ii) reusable; (iii) can be aggregated; (iv) are tagged with metadata. Currently, there is no such system available that would build on the synergies of these two approaches, nor allowing for integration with legacy corporate IT systems._x000D__x000D_JILL will thus enable: (i) proactive, just-in-time delivery of eLearning content (LPs), (ii) user-adaptation, (ii) semi-automatic generation and improvement of LPs, and (iv) integrity of long-term learning paths of a user adjusted to the performed work._x000D__x000D_Proactive, just in-time-delivery of LPs_x000D__x000D_Plugging into any Business Process Management (BPM) system in a customer organization will allow JILL to integrate with user workflow and provide learning content just-in-time and proactively. JILL will offer suitable LOs to the user running particular business process. In the absence of BPM system JILL will get the context by monitoring the applications the user is running. Nowadays, most applications use web-interfaces, so a simple browser plug-in will serve as a source of key words for LP-selection._x000D__x000D_User adaptation_x000D__x000D_User adaptation will be achieved by: pre-assessment to determine the level of existing knowledge, keeping record of past interactions between user and JILL platform (learning success algorithm); analysis of individual and peers’ usage statistics and gathering user feedback (i.e. individual profiling matched with collaborative filtering). Machine learning will be applied to improve the selection and provision of LPs._x000D__x000D_Automated LPs generation and improvement_x000D__x000D_In the simplest setting LPs will be created and verified manually by experts (coaches). In more complex setting data will be harvested from available knowledge systems (KMS, ECM etc.) as well as from less structured resources like corporate Intranet and the Web in order to provide valuable building blocks for new LOs that can be composed semi-automatically from the available contents. A system-mediated reuse-and-refine loop utilizing user and expert feedback will be implemented to constantly improve thus generated LOs. Easy learning content authoring will be focused on quality and didactic controlling. _x000D__x000D_Assessment and long term learning paths_x000D__x000D_JILL will include a built in assessment module to track learning progress of users so that the just-in-time provision of LPs can be personalized and structured as a learning path. This will be handled by the Smart Client which, based on provided key words, will serve Learning Cards (MicroLearning Objects) consisting of questions and answers. This will be used to assess user knowledge gaps and the progress that is being made. Learning Cards will also direct the user to related LPs. _x000D__x000D_JILL results target the SMEs and Public Administration (PA) markets. JILL seizes the identified market opportunity for an easy to install, operate and COtain eLearning corporate solution that assists SMEs and PA units to manage their heterogeneous knowledge resources by the means of a highly usable system integrated with its critical IT tools and business processes. _x000D__x000D_JILL builds on the unique match of expertise and assets of 2 Ps: a Spanish R&D performing SME Anova (area of corporate eLearning content, competency and learning systems), and an Austrian research org RSA (MicroLearning). This allows for technical innovation resulting in an eLearning product of a new generation. Both Ps have been offering R&D intensive IT solutions to SMEs and PA, which makes the choice for these sectors well grounded in their business practice. The limited number of Ps makes the collaboration both at R&D and exploitation stage feasible and cost-efficient _x000D__x000D__x000D_ _x000D__x000D_

Project Topic | JILL will prototype a software system for agile learning work enviroment. It builds on microlearning (learning with small units in many repetitions) and Learning Objects (self-contained, metadata tagged, reusable elearning units) to make learning at work personalized, context-aware & "just-in-time". |
Project Results (after finalisation) |
Anova and Research Studios Austria could successfully develop the prototype of a software system for agile learning, consisting of a learning management system and associated Smart Clients for mobile devices. The prototyped system allows users to learn just-in-time, context-aware and adapted to their personal learning needs. _x000D_In contrast to other elearning solutions available on the market, the JILL prototype offers a number of unique features for corporate elearning:_x000D_a) Just-in-time delivery of learning objects to employees, based on intelligent algorithms that integrate into business process management systems to define and control learning requirements of employees._x000D_b) Adaption to user needs: Learning needs assessment to determine the level of existing knowledge and the according learning need of employees. Additional feedback mechanisms allow for a continuous improvement of learning contents and a better adjustment of learning materials to the requirements of the users._x000D_c) Instant access to learning objects: Exploratory learning along preset learning pathes and search and index mechanisms to quickly access learning content in the situation of need._x000D_d) Multimedia and multimodal interaction: The smart clients allow advanced forms of interaction with learning content including voice based interaction to satisfy different types of learners. |
