Project: Night spaces: migration, culture and IntegraTion in Europe
Acronym | NITE |
Duration | 01/01/2016 - 31/12/2019 |
Project Topic | Abstract This transdisciplinary CRP will study the social and cultural night life of migrants in public spaces in eight European cities, in the Netherlands, Ireland, UK, Germany, Portugal and Denmark. It recognizes the question of migration as key and often polarizing in current policy, political and public debates in Europe and aims to contribute to resolving urgent social and political tensions, supporting community wellbeing and better integration at local, national and transnational levels. Our hypothesis is that night spaces are important sites of crisis and regeneration, memory, community solidarity and growth. The project's main question is: How are night spaces produced, imagined, experienced and narrated by migrant communities in Europe? Research will focus on nocturnal public spaces in their social and imaginative constructions, through in-depth fieldwork research and a cultural analysis approach. It will consider experiences of leisure and work intersectionally with questions of race, gender and sexuality, class and age. The CRP engages with the increasing importance given to the night-time economies, as exemplified by the creation of the office of Night Mayor (Amsterdam, 2014) and Night Czar (London, 2016). Community-led cultural events and creative productions and close engagement with policy-makers will be built into the CRP’s programme to maximize its potential for a better understanding of migrants’ experiences in Europe’s cities at night, their cultural contributions for imagining and shaping European urban spaces and to create policy recommendations for better use of night-time public spaces as truly inclusive. |
