Project: DIgital twin analysis of SOlar Parabolic trough collector plant to scale to higher powers for the integration into Electrical Distribution network
Acronym | DISOPED (Reference Number: ID8) |
Duration | 01/03/2023 - 28/02/2026 |
Project Topic | In the CSP sector there is at present a serious market failure in Europe to move new technologies from demonstration to first-of-a-kind commercial-scale plants (FOAKs). FOAKs are a fundamental step to re-activate the deployment of CSP in Europe and that priority should be given to deployment efforts that demonstrate the validity of the cooperation mechanisms set out in the Renewable Energy Directive. In this project, the TCP-100 facility of CIEMAT at Plataforma Solar de Almería is considered the prototype over which all the analysis will be done. Since it is estimated that an approximate investment of 0.9 - 3.3 billion EUR would be necessary for the CSP FOAKs, the deployment need huge investment. In order to minimize the risk of failure, the project aims to simulate all sub-components such as collectors, mirrors, receivers, valves, heat exchanger and steam generator of CSP and systems, subsystems associated and storage materials available, including pumps, valves, instrumentation, tank(s) and heat exchanger equipment of Thermal Energy Storage (THS) in a software component based on the digital-twin concept. The digital twin of CSP and THS sets in different capacities and subsystems will be integrated and operated in simulation in a electrical network grid. The operational objectives like a peak shaving or power purchase agreement (PPA) mechanism will also be validated by changing the main design parameters of the prototype the CSP plant, lie the capacities of digital twin CSP and thermal storage. The activities in the project will answer all open questions and objectives concerning operation, performance and durability of all involved elements of the system to reach bankability at the end of the Project, under the simulated scenario defined by a Turkish electrical Distribution Operator. |
Project Results (after finalisation) |
In this Project, these technical results are expected: 1) A model of the electrical subnetwork based on digital twin of scaled versions of the TCP-100 facility. The model will demonstrate the applicability of CSP in a real distribution subnetwork. 2) Developing a test tool based on a real grid data. 3) A proposal of a set of CSP plants, based on the TCP-100 facility, to be deployed and scaled up in different nodes of the electrical distribution network. 4) Demonstration of the autonomous operation of the TCP-100 plant at Plataforma Solar de Almería, under the commands of the electrical network. Commercialization results: 5) PPAs target prices for the different CSP capacities in the proposal. 6) CSP and THS usage interfaces in different grids like electrical and thermal. |
