Project: Towards high performance titanium machining
Titanium and its alloys are attractive materials for aerospace and many other industries due to their good strength-to-weight ratio and superior corrosion resistance. However, these alloys are known as difficult to cut materials. The aims of this project are basically two. The first one is to focus on machining of titanium alloys for increased productivity particularly for applications where thin walls and complex shapes are involved (5 axis machining included). For increasing productivity, development and application of new or/or better machining strategies are really important, but as well the development of new cutting tools adapted to titanium machining, which will the second goal. All project partners have strategic roles in this direction and will use science-based solutions related to new cutting tool materials, geometries, proper cutting conditions, coolant etc. Trouble shooting methods such as chatter suppression techniques will be applied. The outputs of this project will affect positively not only project partners but also companies which are working with titanium alloys. The outcome of the project will be spread by project partners to the SMEs which are active in the area of titanium machining.
