Project: Advanced materials for renewable energy, including sun energy, battery, hydrogen and other
The possibilities of the Thin film (TF) for Photovoltaic (PV) solar cells compared with bulk PV solar cells have been demonstrated and currently works are dealing with the objective to increase the TF efficiency, which at this moment are reaching figures around 10%, being the most promise TF made of Si, CIGS and CdTe. While the big advantage of TFPV solar cells compared with the bulk materials is the drastic reduction of the weight of the starting materials used for the fabrication, the theoretical huge advantage of the nanotructured (NS) solar cell is the possibility to increase the efficiency of a bulk PV solar cell. Several approaches has been recently reported, being the objective of this NANOCdTeSOLAR project to prepare a complete NSTFCdTePV solar cell based on CdTe, where the NS will be either the n or p layer of the PV solar cells. Classical methods for the preparation of the window and absorver layer will be used, while ion sputtering at low energy and laser methods will be used for the creation of the NS layer. New transparent conductive oxides materials based on ZnO compounds will be deposited on standard glass substrates, being the top objective of this project the possibility of using flexible substrates in order to reach higher efficiencies values compared with maximum 9.3% of efficiency value which it is nowdays obtained in TFPV market. The project will be carried out with the collaboration of six research centers and three industries, coming from five European countries.
