Project: Bringing innovation and sustainability along the value chain in the industry MEDIterranean TOMATO

Acronym MEDITOMATO
Duration 01/06/2019 - 31/12/2021
Project Topic The socio-economic and environmental sustainability of intensive horticultural farms is an essential requirement that the Mediterranean society and agricultural policies are demanding. Besides, social demand for environmental friendly production requires the use of technologies for the preservation of the environment under sustainable criteria that allow the production of high quality products with food security. Large agri-food producers work in this direction, but that progress has not yet most of Mediterranean SMEs and smallholders. The main goal of MEDITOMATO is to demonstrate innovative technology solutions along the whole tomato value chain (production, processing and distribution) enabling this Mediterranean sector (including SMEs and smallholders) to bring improvements at different levels (environmental, food quality & safety, sustainability, traceability, efficiency and water management) that will contribute to a consistent rural and social develoSMEnt of the Mediterranean agri-food sector supported on a quality, safe and sustainable production basis. To this end, particular objectives will be pursued, including: (1) prototype assembly of in/on-line as well as portable system based on Vis-NIR spectroscopy for non-destructive quality monitoring; (2) develoSMEnt of IoT-enabled irrigation systems to obtain at least 30% water and energy savings in comparison to current systems; (3) application of IoT to soil fertilization; (4) microbiological Risk Analysis for food safety; (5) on-site deployment of other IoT sensors for traceability and the related centralized data analysis to optimize production rates; (6) integration and demonstration in 2 locations (Spain, Italy) of the proposed MEDITOMATO innovations under a whole value chain approach; (7) quantified analysis of the status of the food supply chains benefits (via techno-economic assessment, LCA and social LCA) of the solutions deployed and study of the feasibility for the Mediterranean countries with simulation of business cases in other EU countries and North Africa for implementation after MEDITOMATO execution; (8) dissemination and awareness raising across the PRIMA countries and exploitation of results to maximize impacts. MEDITOMATO addresses PRIMA Call Section 1 - Topic 3.
