The overall objective of this proposal is to develop proven, effective Ecologically Based Rodent Management (EBRM) methods and products, which are readily integrated into local pest /invasive rodent management systems in Mediterranean countries. Thereby, we aim to contribute to the shift from synthetic pest control to biological and ecological pest management, ultimately leading to eco-sustainable farming systems, higher quality and quantity crop production and optimization of input use for ecosystem health. The project objectives include: PO1: Improve knowledge and understanding of rodent behaviour and magnitude of damage caused in representative agroecological systems in Mediterranean region. PO2: Novel plant-based bio-rodenticide (BR) development and testing in lab and field. PO3: Improved EBRM approach, methods and application in Mediterranean region. PO4: Open sharing of, and new fields of application for: novel technologies, knowledge, products and services supporting EBRM. Ecological pest and invasive species management has been rapidly developing in recent years with the emergence of policies to fight climate change and reduce pollution from synthetics. However, management techniques specific to rodents have not received as much attention as similar techniques to other pests (e.g., insects). Therefore, there is still a lot of potential for innovation. To reach MED4PEST objectives, we will develop and adapt a thorough research design based on a trans-disciplinary effort by partners and stakeholders. The focus is on innovation and action research, establishing proven products and methods through lab and field-pilot testing. Our methodology involves a feasibility study based on experimental design. We will do this through the following work stream: In WP2 we will gather new data and fill crucial data and knowledge gaps, through which new patterns may emerge and strategies can be substantiated based on impact monitoring with reference to baseline proxies. WP3 is at the core of the innovations where we deploy novel tech solutions to monitor rodent behaviour in the entire spectrum of project experiments and living labs. Transnational testing will result in much more robust results. WP4 and 5 focus on innovative product/method development, co-creating EBRM methods at scale in ‘living labs’ will tailor it to the local context based on social, economic and environmental factors. Furthermore, researching botanicals (and combinations) will lead to prototype substances and/or bio-rodenticides that can effectively manage pest species. This is coupled with market analyses and working with local youth and women entrepreneurs to provide local EBRM products and services. WP6 will develop a rich knowledge sharing approach with the Community of Practice, through a digital platform, that will emphasise ‘popular’ outputs, such as games, comics, video-sharing, amongst others. This is also part of the upscaling strategy, where we involve local stakeholders from agricultural, government and private sectors in shifting towards eco-friendly pest management solutions. It is relevant to the call as it addresses multiple challenges in relation to a typically neglected/under-addressed issue, in a systemic fashion, including: eco-friendly alternatives to manage pests, promoting biodiversity, improving small-scale farmer’s resilience to climate change, circular economy, women and youth empowerment and contribution to the zero pollution ambition. In all aspects we will build up from the farmer’s perspective, ensuring it is adapted to the local conditions and demonstrating the socio-economic benefits of local value chains and sustainable farming practices, such as regenerative agriculture.
